A Jefferson County man suspected in the April stabbing death of an Overland woman is now behind bars in the St. Louis County Jail.

Michael Cottrell, 59, spent a considerable amount of time in DePaul Health Center after he failed to take his own life in what Overland police believe was a murder-suicide attempt.

Police say the murder occurred in the 9500 block of Ridge Avenue. Killed was Bevery Price, 51. Police believe Cottrell tried to take his own life after killing Price.A week after the incident, Overland police were able to obtain formal charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action against Cottrell. That shifted responsibility for medical care costs from Overland to the county for what officials believed could be a prolonged hospital stay.

Overland did incur the cost of overtime pay in assigning guards to Cottrell during his hospital stay, Police Chief Jim Herron said.

Cottrell is being held by the county on a bond of $300,000.
