Helping Hands

Even though it was about 35 years ago, Frank Valenti, 86, still remembers the day when two men came to his rescue.

Valenti, of Florissant, and his wife were taking his father-in-law and his wife fishing at a spot along Highways 367 and 94. He made a turn off the main highway and drove about a mile and a half down the back road when his car broke down."I didn't know what we were going to do. The road was off the beaten track," Valenti said.

But fortunately, another car soon drove down the road. It turned out the four people in the car, two men and their wives, also were going fishing that day.

One of the men, who was a mechanic, looked at the car and said it needed to be repaired at a garage. Without hesitation, Valenti said the two men towed the car back to Valenti's house. Then they took Valenti's father-in-law and his wife to the bus stop at Kingshighway Boulevard and Natural Bridge Road so they could catch a bus to their home in South St. Louis.

"They wouldn't take a penny from me, no sir," Valenti said. "They went out of their way to help us and they didn't get any recognition. And on top of it, they didn't get to go fishing, either."
